Discover the traditional Maharashtrian Chapati recipe—a healthy, whole wheat flatbread that combines minimal ingredients to create a delicious and wholesome addition to any meal. This recipe features step-by-step instructions and tips to make perfectly soft and nutritious chapatis at home.
Ingredients
4
2 cups Whole wheat flour
half teaspoon Salt
half teaspoon Oil
half cup Water
Ghee as per taste
Tips
Ensure the dough is kneaded well for soft chapatis.
Use minimal oil/ghee for a healthier option.
Adjust salt according to taste preference.
Directions
Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour and salt. Add oil and gradually add water as you mix the ingredients together. Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Let the Dough Rest: Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 15 minutes to relax the gluten.
Divide the Dough: After the dough has rested, divide it into small, equal-sized pieces. Roll each piece into a small ball.
Roll into Small Puri: Take one dough ball and roll it out into a small puri shape.
Layer with Oil and Flour: Add a small amount of oil over the rolled puri and lightly dust with wheat flour. Fold the puri in half, then fold again to form a triangular shape.
Roll into Chapati: Roll out the triangular shape into a round chapati.
Heat the Tawa: Heat a tawa or skillet over medium-high heat.
Roast the Chapati: Place the rolled chapati onto the hot tawa. Cook on both sides until bubbles appear and the chapati puffs up.
Add Oil or Ghee: Once cooked, brush a small amount of oil or ghee on top of the chapati for added flavor.
Serve: Serve the chapatis hot with your favorite curry or dal.
Notes
Those with a wheat or gluten allergy should avoid consuming chapatis.
