Kala Vatana Usal, a traditional Maharashtrian dish, is not only delicious but also brimming with health benefits. This savory gravy combines the goodness of black peas with a blend of spices, creating a dish that's both comforting and nutritious.
Ingredients

half cup Fresh coconut
1 piece Onion
5 pieces Garlic Cloves
1 inch Ginger
1 tablespoon Coriander seeds
1 tablespoon Red chilli powder
4 pieces Tirphal(teppal or sichuan pepper)
2 tbsp Kokam extract or 5 pieces kokam fruit
quarter cup Water
2 tbsp Oil
half teaspoon Cumin seeds
6 pieces Curry leaves
half teaspoon Turmeric powder
1 cup Black peas
Salt as per taste
Coriander as per taste
Tips
Adjust the spice level according to your preference.
You can substitute Kokam with tamarind for a tangier flavor.
Ensure black peas are soaked adequately for even cooking.
Directions
In a mixer grinder, combine fresh coconut, chopped onion, garlic cloves, ginger, coriander seeds, red chilli powder, Tirphal, Kokam extract or fruit, and water. Grind into a smooth paste.
Heat oil in a cooker. Add cumin seeds and curry leaves. Sauté until fragrant.
Add the prepared paste to the cooker. Sauté for a few minutes.
Stir in turmeric powder followed by soaked black peas. Sauté for another couple of minutes.
Pour in water, add salt to taste, and mix well. Cover the cooker and cook until you hear 5-6 whistles.
Once done, garnish with fresh coriander.
Serve hot with Ghavane (NEER dosa), rice, or roti.
