Nagpanchami is a revered Hindu festival celebrated with various traditional rituals and foods. One of the special dishes prepared for this occasion is Patolya, a delightful steamed sweet made with rice flour dough and a sweet coconut-jaggery filling. Wrapped in fragrant turmeric leaves (or banana leaves as an alternative), Patolya is a unique and healthy treat that offers both nourishment and flavor.

1 tablespoon Ghee

Salt as per taste

1 & half cups Fresh coconut

1 & half cups Jaggery

1 teaspoon Poppy seeds

Tips

If turmeric leaves are unavailable, you can use banana leaves or shape the patolya without leaves like Modak.

Adjust the sweetness according to your preference by varying the amount of jaggery.

Ensure the rice dough is of the right consistency for easy handling and wrapping.

Directions

Cook for a minute.Add 1.5 cups of grated jaggery and mix well.Cook for about 5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.Add 1 tablespoon of cardamom powder and mix well. Let the filling cool.

Knead the Rice Dough:After the rice dough has cooled, knead it until it becomes smooth.

Assemble the Patolya:Take a turmeric leaf (or banana leaf) and spread a portion of rice dough in the shape of a puri on it.Add 2 tablespoons of the coconut jaggery filling in the center.Fold the leaf to enclose the filling and seal the sides.

Steam the Patolya:Place the folded Patolya in a steamer.Steam for about 15 minutes until the dough is cooked and the Patolya turns soft.

Serve and Enjoy:Once steamed, serve the Patolya warm. Enjoy this delightful treat on Nagpanchami or any special occasion!
