Ukadiche Modak, Lord Ganesha's cherished delicacy, holds a special place in Indian culture, especially during the auspicious Ganapati festival. This steamed sweet dumpling, filled with a luscious mixture of coconut and jaggery, not only delights the taste buds but also offers various health benefits.
Ingredients
4
1 cup Fresh coconut
three quarters cup Jaggery
1 teaspoon Cardamom powder
half teaspoon Poppy seeds
1 cup Water
1 cup Rice flour
1 teaspoon Ghee
Salt as per taste
Tips
Ensure the dough is soft and pliable for easy shaping.
Adjust sweetness according to preference by adding more or less jaggery.
Modaks can be stored in an airtight container for a few days.
Experiment with different fillings like nuts or dried fruits for variation.
Directions
Heat a pan and add 1 tablespoon of ghee. Add 1 cup of fresh grated coconut, 0.75 cup of grated jaggery, 1 teaspoon of cardamom powder, and 0.5 teaspoon of poppy seeds. Mix well and cook for about 5 minutes until the mixture thickens. Set aside.
In another saucepan, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Once boiling, add 1 cup of rice flour, 1 teaspoon of ghee, and a pinch of salt. Mix well, then turn off the flame. Cover and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
Knead the dough and make small balls. Using a rolling pin, flatten each ball into small puris.
Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery mixture in the center of each puri. Fold and pinch the edges together to form a Modak shape.
Steam the Modaks for about 15 minutes until cooked through.
Serve hot and enjoy the divine flavors of Ukadiche Modak.
Servings: Makes approximately 12 modaks
